The lengthy story of the “Wooing of Rebekah” in Genesis 24 may give us an exceptional insight into ancient near eastern marriage arrangement customs. This story reveals what its author deemed important in the arrangement of the wedding between Rebekah and Isaac. By means of various intertextual links (notably with Genesis 22 and 23) Rebekah is introduced as a new matriarch. In Genesis 24:57-58 it is explicitly articulated that Rebekah was asked whether she wants to marry Isaac, a question she answers affirmatively. The rabbinic sources from the first century CE, notably the Midrashim, highlight the agency of Rebekah: her capacity to decide for herself in such an important matter as marriage. Was this an exception or a rule?  To answer this question, the meaning of the story in Genesis 24 in the stories of the Patriarch and Matriarchs will be discussed first, and thereafter some highlights of the rabbinic interpretations will be offered.
